The Fourth of July is an important holiday in the Ehven home. Of course, every Shabbos is a supremely important Holy Day in every observant Jewish home, and the Ehven HQ is no exception.

So, when the two collide, we have some special fun!

The Ehven Minhag (custom) is simple: when the Fourth of July falls on a weekday, we have one “Red, White, and Blue” challah with each of the Shabbos meals on the Shabbos following the 4th (and sometimes the one preceding it). Challah is a special traditional braided loaf of bread, and we start certain special meals (like Shabbos meals) with a blessing on a pair of these loaves.

When the Fourth of July falls directly on Shabbos, both the challas in each of the Shabbos meals is “Red, White, and Blue”!

There will be a lot of colored bread on the Ehven Shabbos table this Shabbos (tonight and tomorrow)!
